An excellent place to stop for a drink and enjoy your holiday in Crete! At the mouth of the Old Port, you can also admire one of the emblematic monuments of Chania: its lighthouse, built by the Venetians in the 16th century .

2) The Archaeological Museum of Chania
Among the museums to visit in Chania, the archaeological museum is a must see. The museum used to be located in the old town in the monastery of Saint Francis, but was relocated in 2020. It is now found at the exit of Chania, on the road leading to the Akrotiri peninsula. There you can discover a collection of objects ranging from the Neolithic to Roman times. Among these objects, you’ll find beautiful mosaics, pottery and jewellery. Now you know where to go and what to do in Chania when it rains!

3) The Botanical Garden of Crete
About 15 km to the South of Chania, there’s another tourist attraction: Crete’s only botanical garden. A 2.5 km (quite steep) path, mostly shaded, will take you on a pleasant walk to admire the fruit trees, flowers and plants from all over the world. The park is well structured and well maintained. There you will also find a small lake and some animals (peacocks, donkeys, goats). The entrance fee is €7 and you will be offered a bottle of water at the beginning of the journey .

Balos Beach, also called Balos lagoon, is definitely one of the unmissable places close to Chania. With its crystal-clear, shallow over several meters, waters and its fine sand, you will have only one desire: to swim and enjoy the heavenly setting of one of Crete’s most beautiful beaches! To get to the lagoon of Balos from Chania, you have 3 options:
- By car within an hour’s drive +an 8 km track (about 20 minutes) + 1 km on foot from the car park to get down to the lagoon

- By private rental boats

5) Elafonissi beach
One does not simply visit the surroundings of Chania without going to Elafonissi beach! With its pink sand and turquoise waters, it competes with the lagoon of Balos in the list of the best beaches around Chania.

6) The Samaria Gorge
If you want to go hiking around Chania, we recommend the Samaria Gorge. The most famous hiking trail in Crete, allows you to go down to the bottom of the gorge and then go along the river bed. You will go through the narrowest and most impressive passage of the Gorge, barely 3.50 meters wide, “The Iron Gates”. The hike is not very difficult (alternating between downhill and flat) but the path is very rocky and is 16 km in total so bring the correct gear (hiking shoes recommended!).

7) Falassarna
Falassarna is truly an idyllic and quiet place and has been declared as one of the cleanest beaches of Greece. During windy days it is better to avoid swimming there. From the beach the view is astonishing and the sunsets there are spectacular.

8) Palaiochora
Palaiochora is a place where time slows down, and the natural beauty of Crete surrounds you. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, this village has something to offer! Palaiochora has two main beaches:
- Pachia Ammos (Western Beach): A wide beach with coarse golden sand, flat rocks, and sun loungers available for rent. It’s perfect for sunsets.
- Chalikia Beach (Eastern Beach): A smaller pebble beach with crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming. Sun loungers here are more affordable, and it’s close to several tavernas and cafes.

9) Kedrodasos
Kedrodasos is a series of pristine beaches formed around a system of sand dunes on the south Cretan coast. It is the perfect spot if you want to get right away from it all. Most of these beaches are small coves – the main beach is around 400 meters long and is located around 2 km from Elafonissi beach .

10) Frangokastello
Frangokastello (which means "castle of the Franks" because of the Venetian fortress that is built there) boasts some of the best beaches in the South-West of Crete. Fine golden sand and not overcrowded. The very clear water is shallow making it one of the safest beaches for children.
